Luongo’s Status still week to week

Dec 10, 2008

The good news for Canuck fans is that Roberto Luongo has begun skating, two weeks after going down with a groin injury. He underwent an MRI about a week ago that revealed a strained left groin muscle. It was originally expected that the star goaltender was going to be shelved for a while.

He must be itching to get back and his teammates are probably just as restless. Vancouver has lost four of their last five and although the goaltending has not been terrible, it is clear that there is no replacing the Canuck’s Captain in between the pipes.

“It’s not as painful as it was…that is a good sign” Luongo said when asked for a status update Monday. Prior to going down with the injury, Luongo was playing some of the best hockey in his career, having posted a 0.97 goals against average in his last 8 starts, and winning 5 of those starts.

I don’t know what that says about the rest of the team, but when your goalie is giving up less than a goal a game and you only win 5 out of 8 games, that does not say much for your offence.

Mind you, in his absence the offense has picked it up, but now they are having problems keeping the puck out of the net.

So far this season Captain Luongo has a record of 11-5-2 with a goals against average of 2.17 and 5 shutouts, in 19 starts.

He has also broken his own franchise record by going 242 minutes and 36 seconds without giving up a goal.

He’s been a key factor in Vancouver topping the Northwest division, and fans are holding their breath for their franchise player to return…
